Why Is Independence Important?
The desire for and movement towards independence, is a typical developmental milestone for children. Feelings of accomplishment and competence are meaningful and motivating for participants as they begin to complete tasks with minimal adult prompting or guidance.
To Do Lists are for intermediate and advanced participants. The appropriate time to start using these lists will depend on your child’s level of maturity and time management ability. The visual aid of the cards and having each task broken down and laid out, as time indicators, should become less necessary as your child develops time management skills and matures. They will also want a certain amount of freedom and flexibility to arrange their own day. The first To Do List pad is divided into having tasks broken down into a.m. and p.m. The second To Do List pad is no longer divided so a player can time manage their entire day.
Family Forum - when setting up for a new week, once a participant has advanced to utilising the To Do Lists, cards will be passed out to everyone the same way. The participants will then be responsible for writing their tasks on the To Do List and then the cards can be put away. Some need a combination of both cards and a list for certain tasks that require a more visual prompt.
Children learn to become self-sufficient and build independence. The skills that are being addressed in all of these areas are necessary for every individual to have in order to lead a healthy and well balanced life. When your child leaves the nest they will need every skill they can muster in order to succeed.
